Electric Message Signs and Cameras Being Installed
Motorists on the Interstate 93 corridor in New Hampshire between the Massachusetts State Line and Manchester will soon benefit from the installation of electronic message signs and closed circuit cameras aimed at improving incident response and work zone safety, and reducing traffic congestion.
The I-93 Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) project involves the installation of strategically located "Intelligent Transportation System" (ITS) devices along the 19-mile corridor that will be controlled by the Traffic Management Center (TMC) in Concord. Also included within the project area are field locations along NH.
Routes 101, 111 and 28, and Interstate 293.
A total of six "Dynamic Message Signs" (DMS), eight closed circuit television cameras, and four variable speed limit signs at three locations are being installed. Each DMS, at eight feet high and 26 feet wide, will be mounted on overhead sign structures, and used to convey important electronic traffic messages at the following locations:
- I-93 northbound between Exits 8 and 9
- I-93 southbound between Exits 8 and 9
- I-293 southbound, south of Exit 1
- I-93 northbound between Exits 3 and 4 (Weigh Station)
- I-93 southbound between Exits 3 and 4 (Weigh Station)
- I-93 northbound, north of MA State Line
Green Mountain Communications, of Pembroke, New Hampshire is the general contractor, and Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc., of Watertown, Massachusetts is the designer for the $3.8 million design-build project. The electronic message signs are expected to be operational later this year.
